Using differential reinforcement coincidently with antecedent control procedures in increasing a desirable behavior provides an opportunity on which the success of the experiment will be measured. Researchers carry out investigations with the aim of availing reliable results. The researchers come up with ways with which the validity of their experiment will be established. This is the role of antecedent control procedures in differential reinforcement. They provide the basis upon which the development of a desirable behavior will be measured. For instance, in the multiple stimulus assessment procedures, an individual was provided with many reinforcers. Differential reinforcement was meant to increase the acceptable behavior and reduce the detrimental behavior of individuals.
The individual responded to unusual reinforcers differently. The reinforcers that motivate an individual to boost the desired behavior are increased, and those that make an individual develop undesired behavior are eliminated (Vollmer, Iwata & Curvo, 2000). The multiple stimulus assessment procedures helped in determining the reinforcers that increased good behavior and those that reduced reprehensible behavior. In the differential experiment procedure, the reinforcers that promoted the worth behavior were applied immediately and consistently to maintain the behavior. The reinforcers that increased the undesired behavior were avoided. The success of the differential reinforcement relied heavily on the antecedent control procedures.

James dreamed of becoming the best football player in the school team. However, he was insolent and had so pride in himself. He believed he was the best player in the group, and the team was dependent on him. The coach believed that he was talented, but his offensive behavior was going to affect him adversely. The coach decided to bench him during school competition games, and this made him confront the coach. The coach assured him that he was an important player for the team. The coach told him that he was going to be the team captain, besides taking penalties and free kicks. All he had to do was to change his inexcusable behavior. James apologized to the team for his undesired behavior. A few years have passed, and James is a role model to younger players as he is now famous.
