The use of modern technology has been hampered by the risk of one losing freedom and privacy as the tech giants embark on a process to have user information. Companies such as Microsoft and Google have been accused of developing software with the limitations on how users can use them. Therefore, the company can get people’s information and use it in ways that we may be unaware. Some of the tech companies such as Google, Facebook, and Apple may be at risk of exposing user data if they collaborate with the government using their software (Gillmor, 2015). The limitations on how one can use some software currently on the market ensure that users do not enjoy their liberty in the process.
However, some uses of surveillance technology are necessary. Every government must keep its citizens safe and in doing so must have access to information about potential harm. This information cannot be attained without the government liaising with tech companies in getting user data that can be helpful in such investigations. Despite the surveillance problem, some operating systems in both computers and phones assure the users of no surveillance from the tech company. For instance, the use of applications that encrypt messages is essential in that one cannot be watched easily through surveillance (Gillmor, 2015). What is private should remain private, and despite the government’s role in promoting security, the privacy of its citizens should remain paramount.

One of the questions that I would discuss is, ‘what can companies do to safeguard the trust of users concerning surveillance?’ This question requires an explanation on how Google and the rest of the companies can enhance systems that promote privacy and reduces the risk of any surveillance.
