Teaching requires the integration of various theories, concepts, and ideas with an aim to improve effectiveness in the teaching practice and enhance a teacher’s role. These theories are substantial for gaining an understanding of the nature of intelligence possessed by children in a classroom. Most of the teaching and learning theories were formulated by influential thinkers whose ideas have impacted the education systems. I intend to analyze different teaching and learning theories that have influenced my teaching practices by determining the effectiveness of teaching and the classroom environment as well.
John Dewey is among the influential thinkers whose great ideas still connect with current teaching practices. John’s view on progressive education that requires learning through practical experiences connects his education impact theory with the current teaching practices. John believed in an interdisciplinary curriculum that would allow children to freely pursue their interests, constructing their own paths for applying and acquiring knowledge. These views still connect to the learning systems proposed for the children in the classrooms.

As a teacher, different learning theories have an impact, especially during classrooms. Jean Piaget, a theorist presents four stages of cognitive development including sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage. The concrete operational stage is evident in classrooms where children begin thinking logically about concrete events. The formal operational stage targeting children the age 12 and above gets children learning more about moral, ethical, philosophical and theoretical issues hence improving their reasoning. Moreover, Lev Vygotsky’s theory on social development denotes that, social interaction precedes development.
The identified theories influence learning in the classroom since they dictate my interaction with the children. In the classroom, children are at the development stage where they develop reasoning and critical thinking skills. Therefore, as a teacher, I will incorporate the identified theories in supporting children through their interests and enhance social development they are among the learning approaches in the children development stage that require teacher’s participation.
