The Republican Party and the Democratic Party are the two major political parties in the United States. Americans call these political parties “big tent parties” because various opinions are represented under one broad name of the political party (Morone & Kersh, 2017). The big tent parties contain different constituents, groups, and factions, which is a common aspect between them. These parties function well in elections, focusing on the different nature of their platform to achieve huge poll numbers (The Functions of Political Parties, n.d.).

The first post has provided a significant and detailed explanation of why the Democratic and republic parties are called “big tent parties”. For instance, it has been indicated that they are called “big tent parties’ because they cover a huge proportion of the political community in the United States who represent the party. I think this sentence helps the reader to solve a puzzle as to why the democratic and republican party are called big tent parties by Americans. Clearly, it brings with it the idea that most Americans are affiliated with a major political party and thus are registered with either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. Therefore, this explanation promotes our understanding of what big tent parties are and what it means.

I agree with the answer in the second post stating that the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are referred to as big tent parties because they accept different viewpoints to gain more voters. This point is very clear indicating that the American election system favors a two party system, which is dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party and the elections are determined by the majority votes, which mainly operates with only two parties. Therefore, it provides the reader with insights as to why the Democratic and Republican Party are “big tent” parties.
