The performance and leadership in organizations have been an important research topic in the field of public administration. The Managerial grid by Blake and Mouton describes the basic leadership theories that affect public administration. In this work, leadership styles are examined based on tow variables, for instance, the academic achievement of the students and the leadership styles in the school system. The two authors successfully use a managerial grid to propose a graphic portrayal of the styles of leadership needed in the organizations. The two dimensions of leadership discussed in the article: concern for production; and concern for people is greatly discussed in the grid. The concern for people basically involves accommodation of the needs of the people in the company, and prioritizing their needs and placed on the y-axis. On the x-axis places the concern for production which ensures tight schedules (Burke, 2017).
The Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid basically describes the developed grid by Jane Mouton and Robert Blake between 1958 and 1960, was published for the very first time in 1964. The development of the grid was greatly influenced by Initiating Structure and Consideration by Fleishman. In this Fleishman’s work, two different leadership dimensions are discussed: the initiating structure, and consideration (Ayub et al, 2014). Consideration refers to the reflected behavior in relation to the consideration of the feelings and ideas of the subordinates, and initiating structure describes the extent of a leader should go to attain the set organizational goals.
