Introduction
Americans debate and discuss the causes, meaning and eventual outcome of the civil war endlessly. Inasmuch as this heated debate goes on presently, a synonymous assumption underlies all the divergent opinions and theories; the conviction of the Civil War’s critical watershed. This precarious period of altercations in the state of affairs marked the development of a nation and a drastic, dynamic change in the social order of America making the question on the causes of the Civil War, highly debatable. Throughout history, the numbers of books written concerning the Civil War are numerous. Volumes upon volumes discuss the nature, cause and effect of this war in ranging topics and fields of research. Ultimately, this critical analysis paper seeks to highlight the causes of the American Civil War.
Analyzing Historical Debate
The Southerners and Northerners differed on social, economic and political issues. Various disagreements ensued on issues ranging from tariffs, tax, internal improvements, to federal and state rights. One reason that bears heavy weight was the query on slavery. The North was awash with impassioned debates over the validity of slavery and its significance thereof since the constitution exemplified the nature of individual freedom and rights 1 . Therefore, slavery was the foundational issue that eventually led to the Civil War. Secessions broke out, which inevitably resulted in an all-out war. The Northern and Western territories and states fought to preserve the Union, and the South were at war for sovereignty over their lands and the formation of a Confederate state ruled by its constitution 2 . The South did not want the North to abolish their slavery practice since they used slaves to tend their large plantations and accomplish other goals otherwise difficult for them to do on their own. The extent of slavery in the south was extremely obstinate that it was inherently interwoven in their cultures and societal norms. The renting and trading of slaves were a normal occurrence even by the law. Such inhumane actions called for a unified America under a constitution that upheld rights to all persons in America. The issue of slavery brought about all other occurrences that eventually led to the war. Such events included the Abolitionist Movement of 1830, which eventually led to the Fugitive Slave Act, the novel by Harriet Beecher, which was used to turn the hearts and minds of the Northerners, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act that led to anti-slavery supporters. Overall, owing to the above reasons the case of slavery as a cause of the American Civil War remains solid.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the readings changed my perspective on the subject in that it brought to light the extent of slavery as the prime factor that led to the American Civil War. Presently, the issue of slavery has morphed into racism where African Americans continue to face various kinds of bigotry and unfairness. Moreover, coming from a background that witnesses many racial injustices firsthand, it is easier to see why slavery caused extreme tension that eventually led to the war.
