Test the PH of chemicals in the stomach and determining if the chemicals are acidic or basic

Requirements

Gastric juice extracted from the stomach of a living organism

Saliva

PH meter

Thermometer

Control experiment

Test PH of water

Requirements

Water

pH meter

Thermometer

Scientific method

Observation

Chemicals in the stomach are acidic substances.

Hypothesis

Chemicals in the stomach are acidic with a pH of between 2 and 4

Procedure

Test the PH of gastric juice and that of saliva. Extract gastric juice from the stomach of a living organism. Extract saliva from the mouth of the living organism. Collect the fluids in different clean cylinders. Let the liquids to cool to room temperature. Test the temperatures of gastric juice and adjust the temperature of the pH meter to match it. Dip the pH meter in the gastric juice and record the pH value indicated on the pH meter. Rinse the thermometer and the pH meter thoroughly in clean water and repeat the process with the Saliva fluid recording the pH value shown on the pH meter.

Conduct the control experiment by testing pH of clean water. Rinse the thermometer and the pH meter in fresh water. Test the temperature of the clean water and adjust the temperature of the pH meter to match that of the water. Dip the pH meter in the cylinder with clean water. Record the pH value.

Results

The pH value of gastric juice was 3 while the pH value of saliva was 7.3. The pH value of water was 7.0.

Conclusion

Water is a neutral substance with a pH of 7.0. PH value ranges from 0-14. Any substance with a pH of 0-6.9 is said to be acidic while any substance with pH of 7.1-14 is said to be basic. Substances with a pH of 7 are said to be neutral. PH of 0 represents strong acids and 6.9 the weakest while a pH of 7.1 represents weak basis and 14 strong basis. The hypothesis is therefore true. Chemical substances from the stomach are acidic substances
