The point of which people describes their inner experiences is the most recurrent measure is self-report. It offers the most honest insight into subjective skills of the person. Measuring consciousness has a challenge and also practical implications.
A conscious mind contains perceptions, thoughts and other mental events of which we are aware. At times you might not have opinions about childhood friends for years but in case one mentions the name of your friends, you can recall quickly under normal circumstances.
When someone falls asleep easily has a high possibility of having insomnia. Insomnia is the constant challenge of either falling asleep, staying asleep or even experiencing a restful sleep whereby it can be genetic. Psychologists have pioneered Non-drug treatments which reduce insomnia and improve the quality of the rest. One of the procedures involves conditioning the body to associate stimuli in the environment you are sleeping around instead of with sleeplessness and waking activities.
The brain has no sleep center, but it steers our transit through sleep. There are some areas at the basal forebrain and also within the brain stem that regulates our falling asleep. The part which is called the pontine reticular formation, where the reticular formation passes, plays a significant role in controlling REM role which includes muscular paralysis and eye movement.
The intense activity found in limbic system structures such as the emotions regulatory which is called the amygdala is revealed during REM sleep. The signal of an active primary motor cortex is blocked and doesn’t reach our limbs. These indicate that our sleeping mind does not organize and monitor its mental activity as careful as when one is awake which enables dreams to be bizarre and illogical( Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development,2013).
Sleep is also affected by environmental factors like changes in season. People sleep for about 15 to 60 minutes per night in fall and winter. The sleep quality can be decreased by nighttime noise, shift work and stress at school and work. Timing and length as some aspects of sleep vary across cultures.
At stage 3, sleepwalking usually occurs. The sleepwalkers typically stare blankly whereby they are unresponsive to other people. They can also accidentally injure themselves for example if they fall down the stairs of which they seem vaguely responsive to the environment as they pilot around furniture. The pattern is variable. Less than 5%, 10% to 30% sleepwalk at least once. The odds of sleepwalking as an adult if you did not as a child are 1%( Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. ,2013) .
Some people suffer from an ability to stay awake. The uncontrollable sleep attacks that last for less than an hour and daytime sleepiness are called Narcolepsy. The sleep attacks can occur at any time despite how much narcoleptics rest at night. About 1 out of 1000 people suffers from narcolepsy. Narcoleptics may go to REM stage and have dreamlike visual sounds and images when a sleep attack occurs.
