The police involved in this incident should be punished because he abused the power he was endowed to protect the life of citizens. The major responsibility of a police officer apart from protection is patrolling their jurisdiction on a regular basis and making arrests of criminals or lawbreakers. As much as the incident was a prank, it may negatively affect the image of police for making careless arrest and wrongly charging innocent citizens. The police are supposed to ensure they get their facts right before making arrests to avoid apologizing to the public after making such mistakes. The acts the officer undertook threatened the image of the force and a citizen’s life just to win radio competition by recording a prank. In the process, the victim was terrified and never understood the law she had broken. Police are supposed to tell lawbreakers’ the crimes they have committed even if they are arrested in the act.

The police officer cannot justify his acts as harmless because the victim was terrified to a point of death when she realizes her fiancée wanted to propose to her, she becomes happier to an extent of accepting the proposal without taking her time to think about it. She prefers marriage to spending thirty days in prison and paying $2,000 ticket arrears. In fact, an officer cannot lie about the charges of suspects just to get them arrested; that is unethical. Apology is unacceptable in this scenario, assuming that Marcia was suffering from a disease like hypertension; the case would have been different, she would have collapsed or died on spot maybe because of the shock she received to spend some time in prison. The officer’s apologies would not have worked in this situation. Police officers are supposed to carry out their duties without favoring a certain group like family and friends. The officers have taken the oath to protect the citizens from all criminals irrespective of their relationship with the suspects. By favoring his brother in-law, he misused the authority bestowed in him to appease him. It means that, a friend who is a criminal may influence his action in future and might never bring the acts to public eye.

Alcohol control officers in Virginia made a terrible mistake by failing to differentiate sparkling water from beverage. The officers should have verified the content in the bottle if they suspected it to beverage before making arrest. Elizabeth spent the night in a police cell for a crime she had not committed; this is complacency that the department should minimize. The officers think that by apologizing to her was good enough to help her recover from her traumatic time she had spent in police cell. Law enforcers cannot afford making mistakes while on duties. The time spent to arrest an innocent citizen should have been invested to arrest real criminals. However, the idea of dressing casually was fantastic as this make it easier for the officer to arrest suspects with minimal identification. The two incidents are related as they both involve officers’ carelessness before making arrests. The first incident, the officers’ jumped on Elizabeth’s car, another officer pulled out a gun and pointed at her just to arrest an unarmed suspect. The other incident, the officer lied to the suspect for having parking tickets arrears totaling to $2000 and threatened to put her in jail for a month.

To prevent such unprofessional behavior, any police involved in similar acts in future will be suspended without any pay as part of punishment. Depending on the nature of misbehavior, there will be other serious punishment like indefinitely suspension from the force. The police department will undertake not only measures to increase public awareness about their individual rights but also establish a friendly environment to allow the public report such incidents; to foster better relationship between officers and community members. To make sure that the officers’ carryout their duties with good conduct, our department will teach the public how to handle or report cases involving officer’s misconduct by showing them where to report the cases because the force has already established departments to punish the involved officers. Therefore, my department will create public awareness on how to report cases like sexual harassment, false arrest, excessive force, coercive sexual misconduct, unlawful stops, discriminatory harassment, among other harassments.
