Reiki is a healing approach that focuses on energy healing for a holistic treatment both on the spirit, mind, and body. Reiki entails a relaxation treatment in which natural healing vibrations move through the hand of a practitioner who acts as the conduit to the recipient’s body. Reiki treatment focuses on balancing subtle energies in the body, accelerating natural healing, releasing emotional blockages, and supporting existing treatment options. 1 Reiki is featured as a complementary therapy practiced alongside therapeutic and medical techniques in hospitals. The method is considered over standard modality as it is gentle and can be used on even the most fragile patients. 2 The effects of Reiki treatment, such as intense relaxation, have been reported to help alleviate stress and anxiety, feelings of pain, and enhance the perception of psycho-spiritual well-being. Sometimes drug usage is less beneficial concerning the treatment of chronic illnesses. 3 4 Reiki treatment is regarded, in such instances, as a complement to conventional practices because reiki treatment leads to health improvements. Additionally, reiki treatment reduces inflammation in patients through relieving pain and anxiety.

Research demonstrates that reiki treatment indeed works. In a study both in humans and in animals, it was found that Reiki had a positive biological reaction. The study involved a carefully controlled experiment involving laboratory rats where the rats received reiki treatment and demonstrated substantially low depression, anxiety, and stress levels. The placebo group that received bogus reiki treatment did not show any reduction in depression, anxiety, or stress. Studies on humans also demonstrate positive benefits of the procedure, which included reduced heart rate and reduced blood and respiratory pressure. 5 Additionally, reiki treatment is favorable for patients with chronic health conditions as it improves the patients’ self-esteem. 6 Reiki’s potentiality in providing the needed support for a wide range of chronic health conditions is sufficient.

In a market that focuses more modern treatment modalities based on established scientific mechanisms, reiki treatment can be initiated through community outreach. The process involves connecting with the local community, who are potential clients. Through volunteer practices, awareness about the benefits of Reiki in treatment can be raised at the local hospitals and nursing homes. The reiki treatment should be offered at affordable prices that are suitable for the people in need of the services. The internet further provides a forum for an interested individual to book sessions to undergo the treatment. 7 Most importantly, reiki providers should show that the treatment is used alongside other medical practices in the hospital.

The current reiki statistics show that the reiki method of treatment is gaining respect in the medical community as more reputable hospitals across the United States offer Reiki as an alternative healing program. 8 According to research about the effectiveness of Reiki, Reiki is found to be a gentle and safe technique that heals the body and mind through triggering the parasympathetic nervous system. Reiki has also been used in the treatment of patients undergoing heart transplant and open heart surgeries, which demonstrates its increasing importance in dealing with various medical issues. Other studies prove the effectiveness of the treatment in dealing with ailments such as post-operative pain following a tooth extraction, post- and pre-operative relaxation, and well-being. 9

The present paper examines the emerging field of reiki treatment by focusing on why reiki treatment is considered over the conventional medications, the use of Reiki in the western medicine market, evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of Reiki, and the available statistics about the adoption of Reiki in the society.
