Liberalism is essential for the mitigation or curbing of anarchy, which has been explained by different schools of thoughts as well as theories of international relations. For instance, one of the major theories of international relations, liberalism emphasizes how the definition of national interest as well as decreasing military power usefulness, which is the center of how states act, has been made difficult by the existence of extensive ties. According to the liberal approach to international relations also referred to as theories of complex interdependence, championed by Emmanuel Kant, international cooperation is significant as well as the fact that different states have different primary interest (Kant, 1917). Therefore, in as much as there is the need for cooperation, liberalism is essential in ensuring every state can meet its primary interests. For instance, globalization and technology have made it easier for states to engage in activities such as E-commerce, which generates revenue for such states. Curbing liberalism for such states would mean curtailing the freedom of such states to participate in trading activities with the outside world or even other states thus stagnating such a statutes economy. Thus the significance of liberalism provided there is cooperation with the existing laws.
In conclusion, Thomas Hobbes however, uses a different approach in providing a solution for anarchy by championing the theory of realism. According to Hobbes, human beings are living in an order less ‘state of nature,’ which he perceives as a war of all against all hence the need for liberalism in curbing anarchy. Therefore, he advocated for the development of a social contract, which was meant to maintain relative order between a ruler and the people (Forde, 1992). Maintaining relative order is among the ways of ensuring liberalism since it entails providing the necessary conditions for free association and interaction amongst different nations as well as states, thus upholding liberalism. However, in the present day, liberalism is curtailed since most leaders have manipulated the fundamental rights such as freedom to communicate, which beats the realism theory. States have come up with rules that have been accepted for the sake of security and order, which may not be ideal and is done at the expense of freedom. Therefore, there is the need for liberalism since it mitigates and may overcome the anarchy that exists through cooperation and adoption of social contracts to ensure order and security for all interacting nations globally.
