Developing systems with significant amounts of autonomy and intelligence results in many significant ethical and legal questions, in which their answers affect both the consumers and producers. For example, one of the major ethical issues surrounding self-driving vehicles is the question of the autonomous car trade-off, such as a small probability of human injury to the near-certainty of a large material cost.
The superintelligence designers are responsible for specifying the original motivations of the autonomous machines. Therefore, in this case, the designers are the key benefits of the self-driven vehicles as they have the freedom to specify the original motivations of the cars, which favor them (Bostrom, 2003). In cases of failure, to properly align the human goals with those of artificial intelligence, the self-driven vehicles can apply the destructive method of achieving their goals, which harm the machine users and the bystanders (Tegmark, n.d.). On the issue of autonomous vehicle trade-off, in which there is an ethical dilemma of saving material and humans from injuries, policies specify the potential approaches in reducing risks, whereby people can be convicted depending on the verifiability of their compliance. Consequentialism theory embodies the basic intuition that whatever is right is what is capable of making the world a great place in the future. The general approach of the consequentialism theory on the autonomous vehicle trade-off is the consequences of the moral rightness of the acts (Russel et al., 2015). An act is considered right depending on its consequences and the motive behind it. With humanity being a critical value of ethics of social consequences, human protection is the priority in cases of injury.
