The Federal government has a mandate of delivering various services at the national level, with key among them being guaranteeing the American citizens security both at home and abroad through intelligence, policing, investigative, and military initiatives. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a crucial department within the federal security structure as it is responsible for ensuring that the country’s homeland borders are well administrated and citizens are secure. At the time of passing of the Homeland Security Act, 2002, the country was at its onset of recovery from the 9/11 terror attack that shocked the nation to the core, exposing the frailties of the national security structure. The decisions by Michael Chertoff in the 6-Point Agenda of 2006 was such a comprehensive plan on how to ensure that the department attains the required level of practical, viable, and accountable security apparatus. In my assessment, I support the proposals in the 6-point Agenda as a sustainable structure that could yield adequate national security policing and enforcement. The 6-point Agenda offered a robust yet simplified strategy that would ensure that the DHS reduce the vulnerability of the homeland security systems that allowed for the 9/11 terror attack. The 6 points of the DHS proposed by Michael Chertoff focused on; preventing terror attacks in the US, reducing vulnerability to terror, and assisting recovery from terror. The proposals by Michael Chertoff encourage intelligence-based policing through technology and capacity building, as well as speed up the redesigning of the DHS to its new roles as outlined in The Homeland Act. I believe that these strategies under the plan would have allowed the DHS to develop a robust structure in preventive, response, and recovery of security incidents. The proposals in the 6-point Agenda offered a chance to create an efficient and effective security system that would viably address the issues of terror in the country while building a resilient population of the American communities.
