Every person has the capability to be good or bad, depending on the incentive and motivations visited upon the individual. One of the most popular television shows in the USA currently is the Game of Thrones which despite being in between seasons still forms part of popular discourse. The game of thrones has proven that the world is all about incentive and motivation and not about character or morality. Every human being is portrayed as having the capacity to be good or evil, constructive or destructive depending on the circumstances visited upon the individual. Positive motivations result in positive action, proper limitations result in good conduct and when pushed against the wall, any human being is capable of very destructive conduct. The best way to motivate humans is to present positive incentives based on the balance between the stick and the carrot.
The Game of Thrones is primarily about an empire made up of seven kingdoms. One king rules over all the seven kingdoms although they maintain some level of limited autonomy. To rule over the seven kingdoms, one has to sit on the Iron Throne. It is the Iron Throne that all the lords and leaders of the seven kingdoms are always fighting about. The iron throne always operates as an incentive and many of the lords and leaders in the seven kingdoms undertake major prodigies in order to attain. They will go out of their way to fight one another, betray one another and even kill each other in cold blood all in an effort to win the Iron Throne. However, as long as the incentive is winning the throne, a general level of restraining and self-control is exhibited. The lords and leaders will go out of their way to achieve their dreams but will seldom go overboard. A semblance of sanity is always reflected. However, when the life of a major player or their families are in danger, there is no limit, no rules and no sanity exhibited in their actions. The individuals whose person or family is facing this danger will stop at nothing to find salvation.

A careful analysis of modern humanity will reveal that human interaction is all about incentives which create motivation to do or not to do something. As long as the incentives remain rational and balanced, they produce positive behavior but if the incentives get out of hand, every human has the capability of turning into a monster. Currently, there are two main kinds of general incentives. The primary incentive in life is the economic incentive and has everything to do with money. It has been said money makes the world go round and this is figuratively true. Modern humans spend more than a third of their lives in school learning how to make money. They then spend the better part of the remaining two-thirds trying to make money and the dying moments of their lives trying to spend it.
The incentive of money has to remain reasonable for the right motivation to remain and sobriety to be maintained. The statement of a fair day’s wages for a fair day’s work is among the essential minimums for the economic incentive not only to work but also to be good. As long as there is a chance to earn money and the chance is fair and regular, almost all human beings will remain rational and behave accordingly. In the absence of the incentive of fair money for fair work, the hope that the opportunity for the same is around the corner will also work as an economic incentive. However, if there is no opportunity to make money and there is no hope for making money soon enough, social order will fail, revolutions will ensue and the world will be thrown into chaos.
The second form of incentive in the modern world is the social incentive and relates to the ability of people to live together in a community. In the current world, the adage about no man being an island is an actual reality. The modern economy, for example, is based on a monetary system whose basis is one another. Having money cannot result in food unless there is someone else who has food and needs money. People need one another so they have developed laws, rules, regulations, and norms to enable them to live together as a society. The only incentive available for keeping these laws and regulations is the belief that the other members of the society will keep them too and if they do not, something will be done about it. The mere thought that others are not going to play by the rules will create automatic pandemonium.
As long as these incentives remain rational and bear the expected outcome when people respond positively to them, then the modern world will continue to function properly. People will not only be orderly but also productive. However, in the event that these incentives fail , the world order will fall apart and humanity as known today will cease to exist giving way to chaos. Further, every now and then segments of the community suffer from extremities that make them feel like an endangered species. It is when this happens that humans are seemed to have turned into animals, turn against one another or against their governments. Acts such as terrorism, murder, aggravated crimes and others result from the normal incentives in life pushing a segment of the population too far. To avoid such extremities, incentives in life should be maintained at a fair balance.
