The general epistles are doctrinal or instructional letters that were written from a teacher to a student. They give instructions on certain issues pertaining to the faith. This is slightly different from letters which are messages of encouragement, companionship among other things.

Martin Luther openly criticised the disputed books by comparing them to others that were of seemingly greater spiritual authority. He criticized but still used them because they were not appropriately or elaborately put together, though they still had a message (Luther et al., 2015).

James was a believer and a follower of Christ, though he wasn't too eloquent with the way he put words together. This was why his letters were not entirely clear. It was also an old letter which was knew of the first to be considered for inclusion in the new testament.

James was the half brother of Jesus so he felt close to the source of faith. James compared his faith with the slavery that the Jews were going through during the period when they were dispersed in the Roman Empire.

James wrote the letter to mainly encourage the Jews who were going through some persecution and suffering. His motive was to draw them closer to Jesus so that they would keep the faith despite the suffering (Shepherd, 2014).
