The Article I have chosen provides the current state of politics in Canada after the Green Party announced it is set to elect a substantive leader. The party has not had a leader since the year 2006. Electing the party leader is likely to shape the politics of Canada, especially in the next 44th federal election which is to take place in October 2023. The party has, in the recent past, increased its membership and is ranked fifth position in the House of Commons (National Post, 2020 October 3). In the year 2019, the number of elected members of parliament was three. At the time, the party was faced with leadership wrangles, therefore making it a challenge to secure more positions in the House of Commons. However, with the consensus among its members and planned elections of its leader, the party is likely to gain more support all over the country and sponsor a candidate for Prime minister in the 2023 elections.

In addition, the party garnered 6.55 percent of the votes cast in the 2019 federal elections, which was an increase from 3 percent in the year 2015 (National Post, 2020 October 3). Therefore, with the election of a substantive leader, the party has the potential to grow its membership in 2023, as well form the government. The party has developed a manifesto which aims at making post-secondary education free and developing policies to end racism in the country.

Question 2: Key Political Issue and Impact

The key issue is increased political competition among the five parties in Canada. The party is expected to become strong and increase its membership with even aspirations of challenging the Liberals and forming the next government in 2023. The party has had the least number of elected leaders in the country because of the leadership wrangles for the last 14 years (National Post, 2020 October 3).

However, with a substantive leader, the party is likely to become popular in the whole country, which will result in increased political competition, especially to the incumbent Liberal party. In addition, due to the increased support of the party all over the country, it is likely that many politicians will defect to the party, thus making it even stronger. Therefore, the Green Party has the potential to influence the next government in Canada during the 2023 federal elections.
