In any artwork, formal analysis defines the visual communication that the artist employed for a particular piece. The analysis also describes the content as interpreted by an art historian, art critic, and art viewer. The artwork selected for this analysis is titled “The Hawk,” a bronze sculpture, 15 feet high and weighing about 29,000 pounds. The piece is a generosity and artistry of the Monmouth alumnus and master sculptor – Brian Hanlon. The formal analysis of Hawk Sculpture on Monmouth University proves that the form used by the artist is designed to symbolize guardianship, visual power, truth, justice, leadership, higher communication, victory, and intuition.

Form and Context (Design Principles and Visual Elements)

Context and form of an artwork entail aspects such as the principles used in developing space, application of media, creation of tactile values, triggering pictorial light, compositional devices, and application of interaction color. Brian Hanlon has employed the essential 3D language to express the visual aspect of the piece. Specifically, the artist has used texture to represent the power and physique of “The Hawk.” Rough texture is evident on the piece as a representation of the feathers, quills, eyes, and other physical characters of a real-life hawk. Representation of the Center of Gravity, Memory, Light, Space, and Volume are also evident as observed from the three-dimensional perspective assumed by the piece.
