Ashford University was originally founded by the Sisters of St. Francis who settled in Clinton, Iowa after escaping poverty in Kentucky. They lived in the Diocese of Dubuque where they founded the Mt. St. Claire Academy in1893. The school developed over time into a women’s secondary school and into the Mt. St. Claire College where the first student to be awarded a bachelor’s degree was conferred in May 1981. The school was changed to The Franciscan University in 2002 and was later bought by the F=Bridgepoint Education, Inc. in 2005 who changed its name to Ashford University.
The school became accredited in July 2013 by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). It partnered with Forbes Media to form the Forbes School of Business in the same year. Ashford University merged with its sister school University of the Rockies, to form one integrated Ashford University in 2018. Ashford University is currently run by the President and CEO, Dr. Craig Swenson. The school is run by a Board of Trustees chaired by Dr. Gregory L. Geoffroy. The leadership organization also includes the Vice Chair, Ms. Mary Jo Maydew; and other doctor graduates in the board. The governance structure makes the president of the school the secretary to the Board of Trustees; and the Board is the main decision making organ.
