Holistic student development  is described as the emotional, intellectual physical as well as spiritual development (Schuh et al. 2016). It is a way of learning that is more based and focused on the importance of the physical development and the emotional well-being of the child, especially during their early stages of growth. In this diverse and fast-moving world, the colleges and even universities expect the students to develop critical thinking skills and be able to take responsibility for their learning process. The development of the student is depended on their ability to adapt to the circumstances and the surroundings. For instance, the students as per their development are expected to be able to try and get themselves out of problems without coming up with clear or a straight forward answer.

For students’ mental strength, it does not only mean that they are full of confidence but it also ensures that they can continue to grow and learn. As a student, I have been able to gradually develop in all the holistic spheres. Due to the exposure into different environments and interaction with various individuals and groups, I have been able to learn from the different experiences hence developing holistically. In the classroom environment and activities, I have been able to gain intellectual knowledge trough studying. Also, the environment outside of the classes has immensely contributed to my holistic growth and development. This has been drawn from playing basketball in the estate court. I play as a hobby as well as an initiative to keep my physical fitness. Cognitively, exercising improves one’s mental and physical health. This approach highlights my holistic as well as cognitive development.

As a student, my holistic development has been fundamental on intrapersonal capacity. Many times, especially during the evenings, I am alone in the room where I reside. Through the experiences I have acquired in my learning journey, I take time to meditate and reflect on my life. More often, I avoid making bad decisions by consulting my inner self. When I reflect on myself and project where I want to be in the future, I am only left with the decision to focus on the goal. This intrapersonal skill has helped me to overcome peer pressure by avoiding colleagues who would call for partying nights. In classroom environment, I have gradually been improving my focus and commitments to learning. This is because I have an internal picture of the person I want to be both in the near future and later. Despite the fact that when in classroom students are guided by the institution’s code of conduct, unlike when outside of the institution’s premises, I have found it easier to lead a sensible life due to safeguarding my personal image and how I would like to shape it.

Initially, in my early moments in college life was a bit strange. I had no friends and I had little knowledge on how to make friends and relate with others. As I continued to learn and develop, I gradually began to make friends both in classrooms and at the residence neighborhood. I acquired confidence and through spiritual and intellectual capacities’ development, I was able to easily relate with everyone who approached me or vice versa. This highlights my holistic growth.

When a student gets to college, they are exposed to a partially or totally different environment and platforms as well. The new environment gives them an opportunity to grow and develop their cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal spheres (Schuh et al. 2016). Like any other human beings, students can make wrong choices but still get an opportunity to correct them as they grow. Ultimately, the gradual development of social skills, self-communicating, and processing multiple sound thoughts is fueled by holistic development.
