Globalization has generated substantial prosperity among individuals, nations, and worldwide. The increasing interconnection of the world exposes people to global cultures hence providing them with opportunities to foster development of global identities. This paper addresses how my identity has been shaped by global citizenship and the thought of being made a better person in the community through global citizenship.

Distinction between “globalism” and “globalization”

Globalism describes how people and nations interact and integrate with each other making things become globalized. Globalization describes the growing connectivity between people and regions across the globe meaning it describes the increase or decline of globalism (Soto, 2015).

Benefits of Becoming a Global Citizen

Global citizenship is beneficial in many ways. For example, smartphones have made communication easy and provided me with meaningful connections to issues, places, and people beyond my own region. In addition, technology has contributed to my success in academic goals by providing me with new opportunities and great resources for 21-century learning thus able to meet my global learning needs. Moreover, technology has enabled me to meet my professional goals by providing digital platforms that fosters global competence, accountability, and association with virtual work teams ( Gardner-McTaggart & Palmer, 2018).

Disagreement between theorists about the definition of global citizenship

Disagreements exist on how theorists define global citizenship because of the different disciplinary perspectives of theorists that influences their definition and use of identical terms in describing global identity. Some theorist make use of clear distinctions in the terms used to define global citizenship while others use the terms interchangeably. Global citizenship is defined as having awareness and understanding of the world, respect and values cultural diversity, and having a sense of responsibility to promote sustainability and social justice ( Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013).

Importance of outcomes of global citizenship

The two outcomes of global citizenship chosen from the article include valuing diversity and environmental sustainability. Valuing diversity refers to having interest in culture of other people and embracing the cultural diversity of the world. Environmental sustainability is having the understanding that humans and nature are linked and thus we have a responsibility to protecting the natural environment ( Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013) . As far as being, a global citizen is concerned, these outcomes portray the highest level of importance than others because as individuals become globalized, they are exposed to people from different cultural backgrounds, who have their own unique values and beliefs that differ with ours. Therefore, being able to value diversity enables a person to appreciate other people. In addition, globalization has resulted in more consumption of natural resources due to increased production of goods that strains the environment. Therefore, as one becomes a global citizen, he/she can foster environmental protection from the global level.

Personal examples that illustrate the development of global citizenship

Based on valuing diversity, I respect cultures, values, and ethnicities of people at school, workplace, and in neighborhood communities. This understanding has enabled me to appreciate the unique differences among the people I meet from all lifestyles and treat them with equality. Another example based on environmental sustainability is, am a participant in the environmental protection campaign that aims to promote development of healthy and sustainable environment around our neighborhood.

Education courses influencing me to become a global citizen.

Environmental courses influenced me to become a global citizen by empowering youths to contribute to the sustainable development as well as learn how to tackle the emerging environmental challenges in our contemporary society. The courses on diversity , sustainability and human rights have enabled me to gain knowledge and skills that has helped me to understand the value of diversity, social responsivity, and respecting cultural diversity.

Conclusion

It is evident that globalization plays a crucial role in our lives by facilitating prosperity in different spheres of our lives. With increasing globalization in our contemporary society, it is important for one to become a global citizenship in order to function effectively in the global world. Being a global citizen allows an individual to have an understanding and embracing cultural diversity. Therefore, global citizenship is an important tool for fostering success of individuals in the 21 st century.
