Career management refers to skills, attitude, and attributes that enable one to manage and develop their career. It is a lifelong process that enables one to identify their strengths and weaknesses while establishing their successful career goals (Neary, Dodd & Hooley, 2016) . Career management as a skill also helps individuals understand themselves better and relate to their work environment, which enables them to notice current and future opportunities. During this process, an individual is expected to learn and acquire structured ways to gather, analyze, synthesize, and organize occupational information and skills to make professional decisions and transitions.

Organizations think that career management is an essential skill because it comes in handy when doing resourcing and redeployment. During restructuring in an organization, career management skills help the employer place employees where their skills are most needed, and their aspiration is valued. Organizations also believe that these skills improve employee engagement in the company. This is because the employee's engagement increases where the job satisfies their intrinsic needs and personal goals.

It equips an individual with the necessary analytical skill to facilitate rational thinking, decision making, and mediation. Career management skills also help to uphold professionalism through integrity and honesty. Employees are expected to exhibit strong moral values and show initiative, and this is made possible by career management skills.

Academic institutions think that career management skills are essential in developing communication skills that can elevate an individual's career in the future. Effective communication skills help in avoiding disputes and maintaining good rapport within the workplace. Both verbal and written are important when delivering messages to superiors or supervisees, and this is cultivated through the acquisition of career development skills.

There are strategies for developing career management skills. The first step would be to planning the career and setting goals and objectives. By doing this, an individual will be able to understand their interests, passion, and the career path of their choice. The second step is to introduce measures to progress the career. An individual can develop career management skills while progressing in their career. The third strategy is developing an action plan that involves the development of management skills intending to better their career of choice. The last strategy in developing career management skills is to evaluate progress against the set goals continually.

The technology industry really values career management skills. This is because the skill promotes innovations. This quality helps companies in this industry to compete against each other healthily. It also promotes research as companies come up with new ideas and products. Career development skills help technology companies identify their manufacturing and production problems and enable them to develop effective customer care services.

I would want to develop career management skills because they will enable me to develop my interests, attitude, and values professionally. The skill is also crucial in exploring the professional world using comprehensive and current information. If one has a company and is in a managerial position, this skill will enable them to attract and retain valuable employees. This is possible because a manager with career development skills will provide empowerment and challenges for the employees to fuel their growth and push them out of their comfort zone. It is vital to acquire career development skills as they motivate individuals to secure their dream job, work hard, and climb their career ladder ( Evans, 2008 ) . The skills also contribute to one's happy retirement.
