There comes a time when most adolescents need to have more independence and autonomy in the way they make decisions concerning their lives. It is during this time that they feel as if their parents and other family members are infringing upon their much-desired freedom especially if they appear to be dictating to them what they should or should not do. When it reaches this point most of the adolescents repeal their parents and family members as they seek approval from their friends whom they feel are more understanding and accommodating. As such, it is essential to analyze the conditions that tend to lead to such a case scenario.

According to Kids Health (nd), adolescence stage is a stage which is filled with rebellion considering the upcoming teenagers are now growing both physically and emotionally meaning that they are becoming aware of what they stand for. During this stage most parents find their teenagers becoming more focused on what is right and fair and will base almost every argument on this. It is during this developmental stage that most parents find themselves conflicting with their teenagers and adolescents as they try to strike a balance and come to agreeable conclusions, which is not an easy feat.

Parents have the responsibility of ensuring that they create an atmosphere which allows the teenagers to explore their newfound freedom while maintaining good relationships with them. According to Lehman (2012), this is only possible if such parents can trust their children to make the right decision instead of treating them with suspicion. When these teenagers feel trusted there is a great likelihood that they will act more responsibly. These sentiments are echoed by Arnett (2013) who think that the adolescents can be responsible especially in close-knit families where the adolescents live with their extended families.

These adolescents tend to relate better with grandparents as compared to their parents as the former are more caring, understanding and nurturing. As such it is essential for parents to try as much as possible to relate to their teenagers and adolescents in spite of the existing worldview that teenagers are rebellious and not easy to deal with. Instead, parents should consider this as the best time to mold their children’s character since it at this time that they can choose to make either the right or the wrong decisions depending on how they perceive their parents.
