Perception and perception checking are critical to the understanding of text, behavior, or the statements that other people make. In addition, it can affect the manner in which a person makes specific assumptions regarding an issue of interest. Through this course, I was able to identify barriers to self-perception that presented significant challenges me. They include subjective biases and the inability to understand the text based on the intended message that the author might have wanted to pass across. I believe there is a way of dealing with these two major issues. First, I will strive to take an objective view of an issue when analyzing and interpreting it. The second issue can be addressed by seeking background information about the author and striving to determine the motivation behind the text or statements that they are making.
I have also realized that there are barriers of perceiving others that may affect how I understand things, texts, and events. The first one is the tendency to make assumptions for knowing a person well. This is a common problem when am interacting with people who are strangers to me or texts that I have not be exposed to before. The second issue is that I struggle to consider the perspective of other people when analyzing an issue. Instead, I depend largely on my views which can be subjective in some cases. The first issue can be resolved by avoiding serious assumptions before interacting with other people. In the second case, I will strive to be objective at all-time and listen to other people’s views before making conclusions.

Reflecting on a recent conversation, I have realized that there are things that I need to do differently while engaging other people. The first one will be starting by listening to other people to understand their perspectives regarding an issue. Second, I will strive to avoid making conclusions before considering different perspectives on an issue. Even while doing so, the final step of perception checking which relates to interpretation may always remain challenging for me. The argument is based on the fact that people perceive things differently and will make diverse conclusions on the same issue.
