The changing business environment has led to increased diversity among organizations, an aspect that has made it essential for managers to understand the behavior and interactions of the workers within the groups. The study of organizational behavior and the various components in the course has helped in improving the knowledge and skills of individuals with these skills applying to real business scenario. The paper will outline the knowledge and skills being obtained from the course on organizational behavior and the way the obtained skills and knowledge can be applied to the current work environment.
The book by Schermerhorn (2012) outlines the concept of workforce diversity, indicating that the organization should tap into the individual differences in the aspect of gender, race, age, and ethnicity to help the business meet its corporate goals and objectives. The benefits can be obtained by ensuring the managers possess the human skills that shape the capability of an individual to work well, in collaboration with other parties (Schermerhorn, 2012). For my position as a Water Treatment Manager in California, I can take advantage of the differences between the 30 workers in the plant to promote creativity and innovation to improve the organizational performance.

As a leader, several approaches are available with one such leadership approach being focused on personality and positive reinforcement. The approach can be applied in the plant by indicating to the workers of the desired business practices, setting rewards for best performers and informing each party of the intended goals to achieve the rewards. Schermerhorn (2012) emphasize the recognition of differences across individuals when allocating the rewards.
Another concept learned from the course is that although teamwork is perceived as key to business operations, individual differences should be recognized and emphasized (Schermerhorn, 2012). As a manager, the focus should be on educating the workers that the disharmony among the team members can be functional to help in accommodating the top talents into the team (Schermerhorn, 2012). Effective communication is key to ensuring that the conflicts in the work environment are identified and addressed to the benefit of the organization.
