According to recent research, most depression cases are associated with the increase of wealth. In particular, there are many cases of depression among the rich than the poor, among urban areas than the countryside. There have been attempts by scholars to relate those two valuables to come up with a cause and solution. This paper focuses on discussing some theories that describe depression with affluence.
Behaviorist Theory explains how environment shapes the behavior of human beings. According to this assumption, depression is caused by people interacting with their surroundings. Additionally, it explains how people learn some of the behaviors; it can be through observation, imitation or reinforcement. Similarly, it illustrates how depression is caused through association of certain stimuli with negative emotion condition. In particular, this explains how wealthy people have high expectations in life, in case they do not achieve the goals they set, they fall victim to depression. Lastly, the large number of depressed youths from the wealthy families is associated with the environment they are brought up. Most of their parents are too busy involved in their work life hence forgetting about the welfare of their children; thus they end up showering them with a lavish lifestyle and the children turn to drugs and alcohol to forget, which end up causing depression in children.

The second theory that associates depression and affluence is the Cognitive Theory. Specifically, this approach emphasizes on what we believe in rather than how we behave. The rich belief in happy lives and comfort, but rather they live unhappily. Mainly, they live a secluded life from the social society. Most of the time they will blame themselves for been unhappy, which causes depression, as a result, they avoid not associating with people in their normal lives; this causes a lot of stress to an individual and later develops to depression.
In conclusion, the behaviorist theory and cognitive theory are the main theories that try to associate depression and affluence. Additionally, they try to explain why there are so many cases of depression between the rich than poor.
