The New Asylum documentary argues that the American prison system is the new facility for mental health services. The documentary was shot in an Ohio state prison and uses it as a model for mental health in the prison system. Its core aim is to illustrate why the prison system is the novel provider for mental health services.

The most interesting aspects the documentary relate to the facts about mental disorders and prison sentences. On average, prisoners with mental disorders serve longer sentences than inmates with no issues pertaining to mental health. Besides, they are likely to be involved in a violence incidence while in prison and are more vulnerable to victimization by other prisoners. The documentary also reveals that ex-prisoners with mental issues are likely be re-incarcerated. These revelations highlight the difficulties that face the populations of mentally ill people that are imprisoned in the American justice system. They also illustrate the essence of developing policy strategies that are required to ensure that the needs of prisoners with mental disorders are addressed effectively. Such policies will ensure that the transition of this population to the society is performed with minimal effort. Additionally, they will guarantee mentally ill people who are convicted get the attention required for their health needs while ensuring they are not exposed to the risks that threaten their well-being and lives.
