In my opinion, news media plays a critical role in influencing people’s perception as well as reaction to certain situations. According to the members of media, they are just a society “mirror.” However, media plays an integral part in informing the society on the current news as well as facts of day to day happenings in the society (Poepsel, 2019). All the members of the media, including social networks, magazines, newspapers and radio, provide the society with the current information. Many members of society consider the information from the media to be correct and accurate (Happer, 2013). The news media is one of the unofficial actors with the first amendment privilege, press freedom. Sometimes, the media presents information in controversial as well as dramatic manner aiming to attract customers to a specific topic. In some cases, the approach can yield positive outcomes such as in the Massachusetts bullying case when Phoebe Prince, a fifteen-year high school student committed suicide in 2010 after being bullied by her high school peers (Bennette, 2019). Following the media mass coverage of the case, the government was prompted to act by passing the anti-bullying law in 2010.
Families are also unofficial actors in many states as well as federal policies as they can legitimately challenge federal or state law. Although many policymakers question the ability of families to implement laws, there are many instances in which the families have succeeded in implementing laws. Such a case is how Candy Lighter championed Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) after a drunk driver killed her 13-year-old daughter (Follman, 2019). Candy was able to mobilize other women who had similarly lost their children and together, they formed the MADD that would channel their voice in controlling drunk driving.
