The main theme highlighted in the movie is loneliness. Captain Picard ended up being in a relationship with another world leader’s mate. This came as a result of the breaking down of the stasis field in which she was being transported in. Due to loneliness, the circumstances she found herself in made her be tied to her mate permanently. The way she placed her inherent talent into focus on him was a test of her strength of character. Besides, Kamala visited Picard’s room since she was lonely and wanted assurance from him that she would be visited too by Picard.

Another theme in the movie is infidelity. In the next morning, Crusher approached Picard confidently; she expressed her displeasure in the situation as she found it offensive. However, Picard turned down her plea as he considered it impossible to do anything with her. Crusher tried to persuade him by telling him that Crusher was confined in another place whereby she would not find out what had happened. She then grabbed Picard’s mojo, but he declined. She admitted that she was incomplete without finding someone who would imprint on her.

The theme of rejection is also demonstrated in the movie. Despite Crusher’s pleas to Picard to satisfy her sexual desires, she met rejections. Her appeals were turned down as Picard told her he would see how he would ease her restrictions. This is a clear indication of rejection from Picard who did not want to heed to her pleas. Therefore, Crusher is discouraged from proceeding with her acts. Also, Kamala’s volunteer to visit Picard and to get a promise from him was rejected. Thus, the rejection was common among the characters especially those who were associated with Picard.

Desperation theme is also portrayed in the episode. Some of the characters portrayed in the movie are in dire psychological need for a person to engage in sexual relationships. For example, Kamala opens stated that she is in need of a partner since she is in the later stages of her sexual development. Therefore, this is a clear indication that she needs a partner by all means. As a result, the character is desperate and portrays the theme of desperation.

We come across most of these psychological issues in real life. In most cases, we find ourselves in lonely conditions. Under such situations, we long for a person that we can confide and share something with. Just like Picard, staying alone in one place may not be useful as a feeling of loneliness engulfs us. Besides, sex emerges in our daily lives. Relating with persons of the opposite sex creates a challenge especially to couples. Finally, rejection comes in situations where our relationship pleas are turned down.
