The audience was chosen because their role is to provide strategic guidance for the school. From the course readings, it is apparent that ‘ a successful education system is one that combines equity with quality ’ . The purpose of public schools in a democratic society is to help bridge the education gap between the rich and the poor in society. Every student has the right to acquire the values of cooperation and justice, which are key values in improving and maintaining a functioning democratic society. As it is today, the US democratic society is overwhelmed by a rising inequality because of the economic system based on competition and profit. Many students from poor backgrounds are not receiving the relevant education required to transform them into functional dependent citizens. Educational failure yields poorly educated people who limit our economy’s ability to innovate, produce and grow. Social cohesion and mobility are destroyed, and the government uses more public budgets to address the issues. Resultantly, public schools should offer equity in education and reduce school failure.
Public schools should build a society whose people are critical thinkers who can recite and live the values of a democratic society. Many of the policies adopted such as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) have good intentions as they are helping achieve equity and quality education for all. Public schools exist to ensure students are well prepared for employment, civic engagement and to lead a full life. Public schools should emphasize on the importance of being educated with deep knowledge in many fields and voting to contribute to the preservation of democracy. In the past, public schools were meant to help students achieve their full potential. However, due to the rising inequality, this course has been forgotten. As such, public schools should ensure all students (rich and poor) are prepared to live a productive life and be good citizens who obey the rules of democracy.
