Throughout the world, education has been considered an opportunity which ensures there is social equality. It is the role of the state to guarantee that the learning institutions bring that view into reality. Nonetheless, the learning setting has failed to take into consideration the prevalent inequalities within the communities. The school environments are characterized by vices such as racism, discrimination, injustice, and inequality (Oakes et al., 2018). This paper explored the place of schooling in society while explaining its key role in enhancing democracy, preservation of culture, the performance of the national workforce and economy, solving of social problems, and transformation of the national security and competitiveness.
Securing Democracy
In the 19th century, American Founding Fathers recognized that the citizens needed knowledge and reasoning to debate on issues that affected their lives. During these pioneering years, only the whites had the right to proper education. People of color were denied education or put in inferior facilities that lacked resources and skilled teachers (Oakes et al., 2018). Over the ages, the state has changed that and made learning mandatory and accessible to all. Schools accept students irrespective of their background and assert that all students are equal regardless of their color.

Preservation of culture
America, as a country has people of diverse cultures. For instance, the original inhabitants of the land were the Natives. There was a time when the immigrants were encouraged to embrace Americanization (Oakes et al., 2018). Over the years, learning institutions have encouraged the students to embrace their unique backgrounds. The history of the nation is also an essential part of the education curriculum.
Support of the Nation’s Workforce and Economy
Education equips learners with the rights needed in the job market. As a leading country in nearly all the fronts, America has ensured that the curriculum has been exceptionally tuned to give it is graduate an edge over others from around the world. Technological advancement and the financial superiority the country is renowned for can be attributed to the education department (Oakes et al., 2018). For a long time, the US economy has been the largest owing to the skills and expertise found in the learning institution that have churned out competent graduates.
National Security and Competitiveness
As a superpower and a leading economy, the US faces competition and threat from various countries. To ensure that its position is not threatened, the education system has emphasized on subjects such as mathematics, engineering, sciences, and medicine. With the threat that Russia was becoming a champion in space engineering, America revamped its education to ensure that they asserted their dominance in the field (Oakes et al. 2018).
The solution to Social Problems
The school plays a crucial role in enhancing the social development of a society. The learning institution instills the right moral values into the learners. That can be done through religious education or by creating rules and regulations that prepare learners for adult life (Oakes et al. 2018). From time to time, the teachers encourage students to co-exist with one another. On top of that, schools punish and discourage deviant behaviors hence directing learners in the right direction.
Role of Education in the Future
Currently, the future presents the world with both opportunities and complications. For instance, education promises to open up the world and empower people to realize things that are currently deemed impossible. Education has to ensure that the learners will be equipped with the right skills to exploit the opportunities that technology will avail. On the other hand, there are concerns about the threats of dangers such as climate and overpopulation. To overcome these challenges, schools will need to encourage learners to be conversant with the concept of sustainability and planning. Sustainability is crucial in ensuring that the current generation lives comfortably without compromising the future of subsequent generations.
