As Viktor Frankl, a Jewish psychiatrist, discovered the power of perception determines an individuals’ response to situations, people and things around them (Enayati). Often, human response is marred with bias against what they don’t like and hence the need to work on perception. The ability to develop positive perception even when facing difficult situations play a significant role in determing how an individual will handle a situation. For example, even patient needs positive perception to help them recover. Human brain is adapted to dealing with stimulus received based on past interactions with the society. Human DNA, however, provides us with the potential to deal with the all types of situations but must be trained.

According to the ("Role of Assumptions, Perceptions and Expectations in Conflict"), our reactions to situations is anchored on assumptions, expectations and perception. There is need to critically evaluate the assumptions about reasons, intentions and comprehension of a situation to avoid bias. Perception refers to our interpretation of a situation and can be managed by ensuring that we make a deliberate effort to consider various interpretations of a situation. To deal with expectations, we ought to avoid reliance on past experiences to control our belief about things that are about to happen.

According to McLeod there exists evidence that knowledge has an impact on individual’s perception. Stored information takes the place of innate system and helps us to avoid reliance on the past experiences. The main challenge is that the innate response consisting of sensory inputs and past experience is more powerful than the knowledge base. Consistent training of the mind is necessary to overcome the innate response.

In conclusion, there is a lot for me to learn about dealing with perception. The articles helped me realize my utter dependence on past experiences to define my response to situations. Going forward, I intend to focus more on controlling my expectations, assumptions and bias caused by innate beliefs. I will focus on expanding my knowledge base to ensure that I develop the capacity to evaluate each situation based on merits.
