In 1976, Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr. the 38th president of the US observed that a president is not a magician who can instantly end a war, make bureaucracy disappear, or cure a recession by a wave of a wand or a signing a paper. Indeed the president is the most powerful person in any country, but the basis of their powers is the constitution. The president is vested with executive power implying their job is to execute or carry out the laws passed by Congress (Labott, 2018). In this regard, the president is the custodian of the best interest of the public.

The recent international uproar about the imposition of tariffs and immigrant policies separating children from their parents portray Trump’s administration in bad light. According to Labott (2018), some of President Trump’s agenda diverges from the traditional concepts of US leadership embraced by many politicians. However, the Secretary of State, Kike Pompeo controversially defended Trump’s agenda. In light of the developments, it is evident that the president exercises the authority vested in them by the constitution to drive forward their agenda regardless of contrary opinion. One can argue that the most important function of the president, in this case, is their role as the chief executive.

As the holder of the executive power of the US, the president is the final decision maker on matters policy. Trump inherently exercises the executive power to assert their other roles of chief administrator, chief diplomat, and chief legislator. As the leader of the executive branch of the federal government, the president has been the architect of America’s foreign policy. As the appointing authority, the president wants to have people who tow their line of thought working for them. The appointment of Mike Pompeo, who embraces and promotes the president agenda, shows the fruits of executive powers of the president.

As a chief citizen, the president has the responsibility to make decisions on behalf of Americans, because they believe it is in their best interest. The president has assumed the role of the sole decision maker and undertaken drastic measures to change the US foreign policy that has yielded serious implications. According to Labott (2018) the US diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, including China, Europe, and South America, are becoming tense due to the president exercising their executive power without restraint.
