Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in Texas, US, and the world in general. There are a number of interest groups that lobby for the legalization of safe abortion. One such group is known as NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, which is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization based in Texas. The main objective of the interest group is to recruit, develop, and sustain a segment of the constituency in Texas that uses the political process to enhance public health policies that ensure that all women are able to fully access quality reproductive health (Pro-Choice Texas, 2017). Therefore, the primary aim of the group is to enhance productive health for women in Texas and other parts of the US. As a result, it operates at a national level.

Recently, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas in collaboration with Center for Reproductive Health and Planned Parenthood filed a suit against Texas government with regard to Senate Bill 8 (SB8) that outlaws safe and medically proved abortion (Pro-Choice Texas, 2017). They claim that SB8 is cruel and restrictive, as it does not allow women to procure a safe abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Texas wants safe and medically approved abortion to be made legal in Texas.

I agree with the NARAL Pro-Choice Texas that the safe and medically approved abortion should be made legal in Texas, as it will help in enhancing reproductive health while at the same time lowering maternal mortality. Recent studies showed that 13% of the total maternal mortality in the world is associated with unsafe abortion (Baggaley, Burgin & Campbell, 2010). As a result, many people argue that medical abortion is the best solution to the problem. Safe and medical abortion can be used to replace the traditional surgical interventions that cause many abortion-related deaths. Therefore, I support the proposal of the group because millions of lives of women could be saved through legalizing safe and medical abortions.
