As I drove past the street, I noticed a dumpsite used by a manufacturing company to dispose its waste. It was dirty, stinking and unpleasant to the eye. I could already feel that someone had neglected his responsibility and something probably needed to be done. It was until I got to class that I also found a very interesting lecture on ethics.

The author’s main idea is that a business' main purpose is to make profit but also as it does so, act within the ethical boundaries. He points out that shareholders are the most important people for any single business organization. He also notes that it is pointless to define a business without the profit and ethical bit being factored in. I fully agree with the author in all the arguments he raises about this subject.

One of the reasons why I agree with the author is that for any business venture, profit making is at the center of the whole idea. Every business person would want to put his money into something that brings forth profit. If the sole aim of the business is just provision of goods and services without profit then there will be no motivation to risk resources and time doing it.

I also strongly agree with the author that any business is supposed to operate within the confines of ethics. I personally think that if we truly have to define a business, then we should include the ethical aspect in this definition. The business must disseminate information which is valid and true, engage in lawful activities and dealings like hoarding of goods; engage in fair competition but most importantly observe ethics even as it makes profit.

In my own experience, I have worked with a manufacturing firm on part time basis for a period of five months. My findings reveal that the firm does not befit the title business since the desire to make profit is highly rated compared to ensuring a healthy environment. The business is thus not acting within the expected ethical standards by protecting the customers from harmful environmental hazards posed by their poor dumping.

The author’s arguments are in tandem with the documented literature in books. The ideas put forth are valid since they are supported by a great deal of evidence in the examples he provides. I hope businesses can merge profit making and ethical responsibility to its operations.
