In the medical field, physiology is a significant course that every medical practitioner must undertake. The study of physiology equips learners with adequate knowledge about how the human body functions. It describes how the cells, tissues, and organ systems work together to perform different chemical and physical functions within the human body. As such, adequate knowledge in physiology enables learners to understand the normal functioning of the human body. Such a learner can easily decipher when something is wrong when an individual gets sick. Taking physiology classes has been quite relevant in my pursuit of a nursing career. Also, the course has enabled me to realize personal growth in skills competency.

The relevance of Physiology to becoming a Nurse

A healthy human body operates under stable conditions. When this equilibrium is changed, the body becomes unstable, and an individual gets sick. Nurses have the responsibility to take care of such individuals to ensure they recover their body's stability. A nurse must, therefore, be in a position to think and act quickly when a patient requires medical care. Such skills enable them to evaluate, track, and confirm situations relating to patients. When the conditions change, a nurse or any other practitioner should be in a position to determine the underlying cause of the disease and what can be done to assist such a patient in recovering (Colbert, Ankney, Steggall, & Lee, 2009). Nurses acquire these skills and knowledge in class as they undertake physiology classes.

In the pursuit of a nursing career, the physiology course has furnished me with relevant skills that will undoubtedly prove relevant in my practice as a nurse. I understand that the failure of an organ or an organ system to function correctly is the primary cause of sickness. It is, therefore, crucial to understand the functioning of a healthy human body to treat patients well. The physiology course has been particularly important in my pursuit of a nursing career due to four primary reasons.

First, it will enable me to provide my patients with quality health care as a nurse. As mentioned earlier, an understanding of the human body functioning is crucial in medical practice. I have acquired skills that will enable me to quickly and accurately evaluate a medical emergency. This will allow me to take the necessary action that will stabilize the patient efficiently. These skills are quite relevant in the medical field since, as a nurse, I will be prone to situations that require my immediate action.

Secondly, the knowledge acquired during the course will enable me to explain to patients about their diseases. To give quality healthcare, both the patient and the medical practitioner need to understand about the condition. In the event I have to explain the disease to a patient, I am confident to capably do so and make the patient understand what is wrong in their body. The explanation ought to be precise and straightforward for the patient to understand. This means that as a nurse, I will need to be confident with my explanation and understand the condition well. Physiology classes are, therefore, relevant I equipping me with the knowledge that will enable me to carry out my responsibilities without a hitch.

Thirdly, organ, and organ systems are interconnected. This means that a disease or imbalance in one organ or system may trickle down to another organ or system. Without an adequate understanding or this interconnectedness, it would be impossible to comprehend the nature of the disease entirely. A condition may affect a particular system and cause symptoms in several other systems. Physiology helps to understand this interrelationship between organ systems. For instance, an imbalance in the reproductive system result from an imbalance in the endocrine system. I am well prepared to practice as a nurse since I will be in a position to understand such a relationship between organs and organ systems. This will enable me to render quality healthcare to my patients as well as comprehend symptoms that may arise due to the nature of organ systems interconnectedness.

Lastly, success in the medical field is dependent on three primary elements; the personality of an individual, scientific and technical knowledge, and clinical skills (Colbert, Ankney, Steggall, & Lee, 2009). The personality is what enables an individual to support or help a patient. It determines one's willingness to go the extra mile to assist a patient in recuperating from a medical condition. The scientific and technical knowledge enables a medical practitioner to make the right decisions regarding patient care. The clinical skills are essential in the implementation of scientific and technical knowledge. The physiology course has enabled me to acquire the scientific and technical knowledge that is essential in my practice as a nurse.

How physiology has been personally beneficial

In addition to the relevance of the course in the pursuit of a nursing career, physiology has also been personally helpful in several ways.

First, the course has enabled me to develop a skill set that is impressive to the potential employer. The course requires learners to work in a laboratory, research, interpret data, and plan. These activities equip a learner with strong skills that are also transferable to a different line of work. For instance, experimenting and research are time conscious activities that have enabled me to manage my time more efficiently. I have been able to curb procrastination work within the stipulated time frame to complete my projects.

Secondly, I have acquired skills that have enabled me to help others and myself, even though I have not received my nursing degree. I can care for my unwell friends and family members as well as taking care of the needy persons in the community. The course has also encouraged a healthy personal lifestyle to keep fit. I have become a healthier individual due to the healthy decisions that I make each day. For instance, I exercise every morning, a routine that started a few weeks into the physiology course.

Lastly, I have been able to appreciate human development throughout life. This has enabled me to have a better understanding of children's physiological development. As a result, I can interact with kids more productively, unlike in the past. I understand better the stages of development and what kids are likely to do at every stage. I am now more comfortable while talking or playing children. I believe that I will be a great parent in the future since I will be able to understand the emotional, cognitive, and social development of my kids. Physiology has enabled me to be a social being, and I will be able to make a difference in my community.

In conclusion, in addition to giving me an excellent graduation prospect, physiology has also improved my personal life. I will have a wide range of career options to choose from once I complete the course. However, I desire to enter the medical field and practice as a nurse. The opportunity will allow me to put into practice all that I have learnt throughout the course and give back to society. I believe that the course will enable me to be an exceptional nurse.
