Safaricom Company Limited is a network providing company that has been doing well in Africa over the past few years, developing a system known as M-pesa for mobile money transfer. The company’s mission is “to build the best product, use business and technology to inspire empower the society”. The vision statement on the other hand is “to create a better technological world for everybody”. Its main goals include getting a bigger share of the competitive market and give the best services available in the country. 

We are conducting this interview on the company executive to understand the skills he already has and the experience he has to be able to move this company ahead. Additionally this interview is determined at knowing the criteria the company uses to hire its highly competent team.

Interview Questions 

Q1. How did you prepare yourself for this current role? 

Ans: I have been a manager in different other departments in both this company and others before therefore this experience in management prepared me for this position. I have also done several management skill courses. 

Q2. What is the definition of a top candidate according to you? 

Ans: Atop candidate should be well skilled in this industry, be well educated with good certificates and be highly motivated and confident with his work. 

Q3. What are some critical factors of the interviewee when trying to find good talent? 

Ans: The interviewee should be confident with his questions and well knowledgeable about the company and the industry as well. 

Q4. How would they influence an employee to ensure quality outcomes? 

Ans: A knowledgeable interviewee will ask the right questions to test the knowledge and abilities of the candidate. 

Q5. How frequently do you do the new hiring? 

Ans: We do have annual hiring at around February. We also hire anytime a position is left blank for example when an employee resigns. 

Q6. What has been your experience working for this company? 

Ans: I have enjoyed every bit of it. The management is very organized making achieving goals easy. There are so many traveling sessions too which is interesting. Additionally, few disputes exist which make my job easy. 

Q7. How can you tell a candidate is a potential from the first impression they walk into the room? 

Ans: A candidate can be judged by his/her level of confidence when they come for an interview. The candidate’s presentability too tells if we will work with them or not. 

Q8. How do you relate to the coworkers and the management? 

Ans: As a human resource manager, I have a very good relationship with my team and the management. Once in a while, I organize lunch for the teams to improve relations between the company employees. 

Q9. What are some of the challenges you face in your position 

Ans: Frequently I face pressure from the other departments when an employee I recruited is not performing according to the required or expected standards. 

Q10. For how long have you been in this position? 

Ans: I have been an HR manager in this company for 4 years now. 

Q11. Is this your first HR position? 

Ans: No. I have been a human resource manager for 2 other companies before. 

Q12. How do you plan and organize yourself to lead to success? 

Ans: I involve all business leaders of the company in planning and making a strategy. I also try to implement the right philosophies in implementing my human resources for the company. 

Q13. What does career progression look like within the business unit for which you are hiring? 

Ans: Our employees are able to improve their careers and get to bigger ranks. We pay for them do any additional courses they would want just to improve the organization’s performance. 

Q14. Tell me about your company culture 

Ans: Our employees enjoy several privileges such as health and fitness education, having rooftop dinners and continued education for the employees through the Safaricom Academy, available in major leading universities. 

Q15. What do you do as the HR to influence the company culture? 

Ans: I act as a watchdog on a lifeguard to my company culture. I direct most activities to ensure that they align with the company goals and culture. 

Q16. If you were to describe your role as the HR manager in this company in three words what would they be? 

Ans: Plan, direct, perform 

Q17. How will the team you are looking for influence the strategic planning of this company? 

Ans: Enough employees will enable effective time for delivery of customer products. The new team of employees will also be efficient in terms of quality due to skills and experience, therefore, quality customer products. 

Q18. How do you ensure there is diversity in your organization as the head of human resource? 

Ans: One of our requirements in recruiting is a diverse candidate while is capable of doing different tasks and not one, for example, the supply chain manager must also have computer skills like excel. 

Q19. Do you consider gender while picking your candidates? 

Ans: Yes, we pick an equal number of candidates, in terms of gender, that is 5 males and 5 females. 

Q20. Have you had cases of disputes within the human resource department? If yes how did you handle them? 

Ans: At one moment two junior employees got into a fight. I had to involve the police in their case since it was a bloody fight, after which I suspended both for 1 month before they could resume work. 

Q21. If one of the employees you hire today makes a serious mistake what do you do? 

Ans: I do a thorough investigation of circumstances that surround this mistake and weigh all the necessary choices before coming to a conclusion. 

Conclusion 

In conclusion, the human resource of the company seems to very much organized in achieving its goals. The executive has enough skills and experience, judging from former work experiences and also his way of managing the human resource team.
