The Christian analysis of the sin of suicide is based on Gods commandment that clearly instructs against killing. The Christian faith regards God as supreme, the giver of life and its preserver (Meade, 2016). My Christian stand is against taking one’s life for whatever reason or circumstance and neither suicide nor euthanasia is justified. I see it as a violation of the set rules of God which ascertains judgment and condemnation. Suicide is considered as wickedness in the Bible and those who practice it have no place in heaven. As Meilaender says “Christians have held that suicide is morally wrong because they have seen in it a contradiction of our nature as creatures, an unwillingness to receive life moment by moment from the hand of God without ever regarding it as simply “our” possession” ((Meilaender, 2013,p.58). Suicide is a sin because it brings immediate death and Christians are called to serve the purpose of God and accomplish His will and only he can decide to end someone life.
Euthanasia also referred to as mercy killing or physician-assisted suicide is derived from the concept of dying with dignity as opposed to increased suffering and pain that is common in near death situations and circumstances. Many have opted for euthanasia in moments of desperation where the only way out of suffering and intense pain is seen a death (Shelly& Miller, 2006). From a Christian perspective, the commandment against killing still stands and is not justified if it is done by a doctor. The calling to uphold life as precious and treasure is because it is not our own but a gift from God (Meade, 2016). is what makes euthanasia unacceptable. It takes away the promise of restoration that God is able to heal and eliminate our suffering even in the most critical time. It denies a person to wait upon Gods will to heal or to bring to rest which should be His sole decision.
