The journal begins with an excerpt from the book of Mathew. In that excerpt, Jesus talks about two sets of people who differently make use of his teachings. First, he talks about the people who follow and obey his teachings. Jesus goes ahead and relates them with someone who has built a house based on a foundation of solid rock with the ability to withstand the floodwaters and winds. He then considers those who take his word for granted as foolish and relates them to a person building a house on sand. The story of the crow and the fox comes in. The story talks about a famine-stricken land where a hungry fox meets a crow with a piece of cheese. The fox compliments the crow's voice and successfully gets the cheese after fruitless attempts by other animals. The story warns us not to be easily deceived by flattery. The two stories highlight the results of how we decide to use the information that we are given.
At some point in our lives, it is normal to encounter stories that have shaped us in one way or another. I find the fox's story and the crow so interesting to me since it reminds me of my pre-high school days. I used to have many friends, most of whom were my classmates. I was never good at mathematics, and I would spend a good part of my lunch break just doing some extra revision. Luckily enough, I was the only student in our group who used to remain with extra cash to buy whatever I wanted for myself. I remember my maths teacher advised me always to take advantage of my free time to sharpen my mathematical skills. On the other hand, my friends always imparted a weird notion on my mind that mathematical skills always improve as an individual matures. Therefore, I believed them, and I would buy them foodstuffs, drinks and gifts during lunch breaks. Every exam came and passed, and I realized that my performance continued dropping. I regretted following their idea as it only benefited them more and resorted to my teacher's advice.
