Coaching is widely accredited as one of the key factors that contribute to one’s career success, skills development, and socio-emotional support (Huggins, 2003). Therefore, effective coaching contributes to higher self-effectiveness and expanded competencies and skills, which in turn support personal advancement in career and educational domains. In coaching, the concept of roadmap refers to a plan that describes the client’s goals and the major steps required to achieve the identified goals.

One of the most vital components of coaching is writing down the client’s short term and long term goals (Professional Coaching, 2018). Setting goals is the first step in helping the coachee move from where he is to where he aspires to be. This is what the coach and the coachee are working towards. The road map is what the coach uses to help the client achieve the set goals. A goal often means an action which must be taken to achieve it; so the roadmap process helps to identify how best to achieve those goals.

The roadmap does not only outline the client’s goals but also serves as a communication device that helps articulate the client’s strategic thoughts (Huggins, 2003). It helps incorporate the client’s thinking process and the development of behaviors that will better help accomplish the goals set. The human though processes tend to influence behavior. Therefore, how human beings internalize a goal, desire, and situation reflect their actions and behaviors. The roadmap tool helps to align the client’s thought process with the desired goals.

Implementation of the roadmap concept is important to meeting objectives with the client because, by evaluating the client’s thoughts, actions and feelings, it becomes possible to create a plan to move the client from where is he to where he wants to be. Within the coaching relationship, this process is important because, besides motivation, it also addresses key elements of achieving goals. The primary focus of the roadmap process is on the core factors such as feelings, likely to affect the progress of coaching (Professional Coaching, 2018). For instance, some people become anxious when faced with certain situations. Often, anxiety yields some intense emotional and physical reactions. Therefore, some people may consciously or unconsciously adapt their fight of flight mechanisms to avoid situations that can cause such feelings. Failure to recognize such feelings affects an individual’s capability to change their behavioral response and thought process (Professional Coaching, 2018).

During coaching, it is important to help the client abandon the old ways and develop emotional regulation flexibility (Professional Coaching, 2018). The concept of roadmap limits the client’s negative, habitual, and repetitive behaviors which hinder them from making positive changes. This upholds the integrity of the coaching process by holding the client accountable for adhering to the path of the desired goals rather than holding them responsible for recognizing where they are.
