Beauty and the beast, released in 1991 by the Walt Disney pictures has grown to become one of the most sensational and influential animated movie in American television networks. In the year 1992, the movie beauty and the beast was nominated for the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture. The movie's plot and story which is based on love is described by most of its viewers to be fascinating and attractive due to its perfect use of adorable characters and extraordinary humor. Disney pictures have over years been popular for their application of symbolism to describe various themes and crucial events in their movies, apparently, the Beauty and the beast was not left behind, this movie has used the concept of symbolism in most of its scenes to highlight various development in the movie's main story. This essay will critically analyze how the directors and editors of this pitch have incorporated the aspect of symbolism to explain various occurrences in the Beauty and the beast animated movie (Boyle, 2017).

The movie’s fairy tale introduces us to an adorable love and romance story between a humble and beautiful girl, Beauty, and a prince, Gason, who was transformed into an ugly beast due to his arrogant behavior by an enchantress identified as an old beggar living around the castle. The beast is cursed by the old beggar to stay as a beast his entire life unless he perfectly learns how to love and take care of other people. As a result, the old beggar provides Gason with the magical rose flower and the magic mirror, he is supposed to use the rose to try and find love, whereas, the magic mirror should enable him to watch the entire outside world and at the same time protect him from being harmed by the people living outside the castle (Boyle, 2017).

The magical rose is the main master symbol that the Disney editors and producers use as a significant tool which symbolizes passionate love and changes with time. The idea of the wilting of the rose flower also symbolizes the pain and suffering, this is demonstrated in the movie when Gason tries very hard to protect the rose. The rose flower illustrates the changes that happen over time as Belle and Gason meet and fall in love irrespective of the physical appearance of the beast. The rose is revealed to be sitting under the glass in the beast abandoned castle, with time the rose wilts as a result of the spell which had been cast by the old beggar, its wilting symbolizes sad things to happen in future such as death especially to Gason. It is clear that if the rose wilts completely without the beast having found someone to love and take care of it will definitely lead to his death. On the other hand, the magic mirror has been used as a symbol to represent various themes in the movie. Firstly, the mirror is used as a way of imprisonment to the beast for his rude and arrogant behavior in his earlier days, when he holds the mirror it becomes his weakness since it reminds him of the sweet and delightful things he has lost to the outside world and the things he can’t possess at his current position in the abandoned castle as an ugly beast (Boyle, 2017).

Generally, most producers are usually interested in a well-designed stage that brings out the script story perfectly and at the same time allows easy flow of ideas and systematic transformations in the stage to ensure that the audience is attracted by the respective stage designs. Color designing is one of the commonly used stage techniques to enlighten the scenes in the play. This is one of the mechanism I can use in my designs to ensure that the stage is enlightened by various colors to symbolize various themes and ideas across different scenes in my play. On the part of the actors in play, I would ensure that I have designed the perfect costumes and attires to dress the characters according to their respective acts in the play so as to bring out an attractive performance to the audience. Similarly, I would ensure the stage is lively for the audience by making certain that the stage and drama are accompanied with favorable sound effects such as soft music to spotlight different attitudes and humor in the play. Stage lighting is the other crucial element that I can successfully incorporate in my play to ensure that the audience is directed towards the main act at that moment so as to encourage their attentiveness to the play.
