Introduction

The study of the nature of God and religious beliefs is one area that entails a lot of controversy and misunderstandings. The Christian theology covers a wide area of the biblical teachings, each of which holds a great significance in the lives of Christians. One such area is the topic of forgiveness. The Bible teaches Christians to forgive so that they can be forgiven by the Father. In the application of human redemption, God regenerates our hearts and then grants faith by which people can forgive each other, making forgiveness have a strong biblical foundation through which Christians can apply in their daily lives.

Theological Term and Definition

On the Christian perspective, forgiveness means that God has remitted all the punishment he had deserved for human beings for their sins. It means that the punishment due to human beings have been released and not inflicted upon by the transgressor. In the application of human redemption, God regenerates human hearts, and provide a strong faith, and using that faith, He provides us for the forgiveness of sins and imputes the righteousness of Christ (Bash, 2015). The lives of Christians involves a long process marred with sins and by confession and forgiving those who sin against us; God will show his faithfulness and just by forgiving our sins. Forgiveness is one of the key concepts that determine the Christian faith. For God is merciful and faithful, He forgives human kind of their sins, and so shall they be expected to forgive against those who sin against them. In this, Christians release the burden of emotions that come with failing to forgive.

Biblical Foundation for Forgiveness

Forgiveness is founded on the biblical teachings about the nature of God and his mercy on human beings. The Father in heaven was the creator of forgiveness, and he lavishes it on us. In 1 John 1:9, the bible states that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This shows that forgiveness has its roots from the Bible, and it is a word created by God, and he lavishes it on his creatures. Forgiveness does not only come from God, but he also expects his creatures to copy his example and forgive others, for in forgiving others, he strengthens our faith and forgives us. Luke 17: 3-4 states, “pay attention to yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.” This bible verse takes Christians deep into the roots of forgiveness and how God wants us to forgive each other. The biblical foundation of forgiveness is also evident in the teachings of Jesus Christ during his ministry. In Mathew 6: 14-16, it is said, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” This demonstrates that God wants us to forgive others so that he can forgive us.

Practical Application of Forgiveness

In practical life, forgiveness comes in when one person wrongs the other. People offend others in their daily lives, either knowingly or unknowingly. In such a case, Christians are expected to forgive those who wrong against them. Forgiveness in real life means letting go the wrongs that one have done on you and erasing all the emotions and bad thoughts about the person. for example, forgiving a person who has wronged you means not holding any grudge with the person or having hard emotions towards the person. By doing this, Christians can gain control of their lives from hurt emotions (Bash, 2015). It helps erase bitterness and creates a peace of mind and happiness. When a person wrongs us, and we do not forgive, we tend to be bitter and hurt most of the times, and this could have psychological effects on our lives. Forgiving makes me forget and develop peace within me.

Conclusion

Forgiveness is one of the key concepts that are of great importance to Christians. As founded in the Bible, God wants his people to forgive each other because he is also merciful and forgive us of our sins when we confess. Forgiving entails letting go the wrongs done on us by other people, accepting their sorry and removing any feelings of hurt towards them. Forgiveness helps Christians not only connect with God but also to live a happy life without bitterness.
