Modifying behavior is one of the challenging tasks one can undertake. Behavior change requires significant investment in time emotion and effort. There are several elements of change essential in behavior change. It is essential to indentify the barriers existing in implementing the change, chance of relapse and readiness to change.

In the precontemplation phase, the objective will be to rethink my behavior, assessing the risks associated with the current behavior. This phase is associated with denial. Individuals do not perceive their current behaviors as a problem. Rethinking behavior and assessing the risks of the current behavior helps to identify the consequences associated with specific actions (Lai, 2019) . After the contemplation phase, the next crucial step in behavior change is contemplation. Weighing the benefits and the risks of a change in behavior will help generate the need for behavior change.

Preparation in changing behavior will require listing down the goals of behavior change, preparation of action plan, and generation of motivating statements. During the preparation phase, there are several opportunities to make life lasting behavior change. This will be achieved through gathering information on behavior change. Behavior change requires certain resources. Support groups, friends and counselors play a critical role in offering encouragement and advice in behavior change (Lai, 2019) . After the preparation phase, the next step would be action phase. Some of the key strategies in this phase include rewarding success and seeking out support from friends and counselors.

After a transition to a desired behavior, maintenance of the new behavior becomes a new challenge. At this level, there are high chances of relapse. Keeping up with new a new behavior requires avoiding previous undesired behavior while being persistent on the new behavior. Relapse can be disappointing and frustrating. In case of a relapse, it is essential to identify the triggers that resulted into the relapse and identifying the barriers to success while reaffirming commitment to change.
