The notion of adopting the values of the parents and other elderly persons in an adolescent’s social setting seems no longer acceptable, particularly in the global era where the internet is playing a critical role in enhancing the capacity of an individual to meet people with whom to share similar interests. I agree with Erikson that adolescents should be allowed to explore in a bid to obtain an identity with which they can conform.
