Erikson’s theory of personality is quite insightful as far as the various stages of human development are concerned. The attributes associated with each developmental stage are particularly fascinating. The theory enlightens a reader by creating knowledge about how various personality traits develop and get embedded in a person’s way of life. The theory is also interesting in the way it manifests how caregivers, parents, teachers, and others who may be involved in the various stages of human development should undertake their duties to ensure that the positive attribute of a specific stage is embedded successfully while avoiding the extremity of the negative attribute.

A major lesson I learnt by exploring Erikson’s theory is that trust is something that one acquires in infancy and not in later stages of development. This idea is important in guiding caregivers on how to handle their infants to ensure that they develop trust for those in their social contexts. The notion of identity confusion at the adolescence stage also yields new knowledge as to why some adolescents tend to be defiant. While an adolescent is busy trying to unravel the mystery of who he or she is or could be, there are various characteristics that manifest him or her as rebellious. The notion of adopting the values of the parents and other elderly persons in an adolescent’s social setting seems no longer acceptable, particularly in the global era where the internet is playing a critical role in enhancing the capacity of an individual to meet people with whom to share similar interests. I agree with Erikson that adolescents should be allowed to explore in a bid to obtain an identity with which they can conform.

Erikson’s theory is also enlightening as it provides some tips on how an adult and the elderly can lead a satisfactory life. The notion of making appropriate choices in relationships, striving to accomplish specific goals, and leading life in a way that yields hope for tomorrow are critical factors in yielding personal integrity rather than despair in old age.

By reading Erikson’s theory of personality and the various attributes of each developmental stage, I feel highly enlightened as far as various occurrences in life are concerned. I also develop the belief that this theory could help in solving the various problems that parents and other parties experience in children’s upbringing. The theory could also offer a good foundation for people in the early adulthood stage on how they can lead a satisfactory life in later developmental stages.
