Demographics

Numbers, Geographic Distribution, and Age

According to Flores, Herman, Gates and Brown (2016), about 0.6% of grownups in the U.S. are transgender . Similarly, the research holds that the fraction of adults identifying as transgender in states ranges from 0.3 percent in North Dakota to 0.8 percent in Hawaii. On the other hand, Valens (2017) indicates that young adults are more probable to identify as transgender compared to older people. Across states, millennials between eighteen to twenty-four years solidly report being transgender at a greater rate than those at twenty-five years and above (Valens, 2017). For example, 0.84% of California grownups between eighteen to twenty-four years identify as transgender, while only 0.77% of grownups of ages twenty-five to sixty-four are transgender (Valens, 2017).

History in the Workplace

Transgender employees have had an invisible and misinterpreted presence in the U.S. (Wharton School, 2015). Nonetheless, they are coming out to be visible in the nation as there are many court cases as they fight for their rights. As such, employers are evading the discrimination of this population to lower the risk of litigation, which is expensive. The presence of the transgender population in the workplace has mainly been influenced by the move to handle the condition before it develops into a legal issue (Wharton School, 2015).

Specific Challenges

The transgender community faces many challenges in the modern workforce including being fired or getting demoted. Also, these individuals are asked not to dress in a certain manner, and not to speak about their need for gender transition (Wharton School, 2015). Generally, transgender employees operate with a high level of risk. For instance, their level of unemployment is twice the national average for the overall population. Additionally, the National Transgender Discrimination Survey holds that fifty percent of this population report to have been harassed at their places of work (Wharton School, 2015).

This friction arises from the intrinsic nature of how individuals seem to hang out with people who are like them. For example, people may want to go to lunch and have to carpool together with those who are like them. However diverse the place of work is, individuals end up isolating themselves. Nevertheless, managers have to find out how to enable dynamics. Hence, they have to go beyond just introducing them as transgender, and assuming that all is going to work harmoniously and without a glitch (Wharton School, 2015).

Reflection

The transgender community is highly stigmatized in society and at work due to rejection from everybody. Most people as well as the government are not coming to their support. For example, President Trump has lately engaged in a memorandum that bans some transgender individuals from serving in the US army (BBC, 2018). In the same way, a study by the National Public Radio (NPR) shows that more than half of transgender teachers face discrimination at their places of work (BBC, 2018). Hence, transgender people look relatively happy, quite sociable, but they face inner turmoil about who they were ever since infancy. They live in denial and they are never honest about how they feel. As such, people should be loving to the transgender community by supporting those transitioning while at work, and encourage and facilitate the change of their name in the company directory. Moreover, people should aim at helping the victims to express their gender according to the appropriate dress code.
