The main topic of this article is on the plight of the homosexuals and lesbians, particularly in Iran. As Najmabadi (2008) acknowledges, it is true that the issue of homosexuals and lesbians has been a hot topic debate in Iran, even within the mainstream media. In fact, this topic of lesbianism and homosexuality is now hotly debated across the whole world and is now fast becoming a political tool for determining the outcome of elections. The reason for the relevance of this topic is that the number of lesbians as well as the homosexuals is rising steadily. As the noted in the article, this group of people, who engage in lesbianism and homosexuality, are now facing a lot of challenges, especially in nations like Iran where Islam is the largest religion. It is understood that Islam is a religion rebukes homosexuality and lesbianism. Those who are lesbians and homosexuals normally face harsh punishment when they are caught.

The concept that was quite novel to me in this article is the importance of marriage in determining the gender relations of people. Najmabadi (2008) uses the institution of marriage to explain and demonstrate the huge challenge that homosexuals and lesbians face, particularly in Iran. The common social expectation is that everybody who is an adult gets married. The marriage expected is the traditional male-female one. Therefore, male-male and female-female couples face the harsh threat of the demand for normal marriage within the society. As a result of this demand, most of the homosexuals and lesbians live in stigma since the society does not regard their relationships normal.

The only issue that is not agreeable in this article is the mention of the idea that lesbians and homosexuals are completely not accepted across the world. It has to be noted that the reality is the world is beginning to observe the rights of these groups in the society.

The question that class should consider about this reading is; what is the future of the homosexuality and lesbianism in countries like Iran?
