Illegal immigration is an issue that has plagued the United States for a very long time. On Friday 6 th April 2018, President Trump issued a new directive seeking to abolish the catch and release policy which involves the automatic release of immigrants caught prior to their court hearing. It appears that this has only encouraged more illegal immigrants into the country since they know quite well that if they are caught there will be no detrimental consequences on their part. It is, therefore, apparent that the Trump presidency is seeking to lock out illegal immigrants for good.
The president has issued a memo to all the relevant authorities by sanctioning them to adopt strict guidelines which will, in turn, keep “aliens” at bay. The Department of Homeland Security is part of the government agencies which have been offered a 45 days ultimatum by the president to elaborate on the methods they are seeking to adopt in order to end the catch release policy (Gonzales, 2018). This also applies to the Department of Justice and also the Health and human services department ( Gonzales, 2018 ). Further still, president Trump expects diplomatic efforts to be made to ascertain that nations take up responsibility and accept their citizens who have been deported back. The government is also seeking to establish the amount of resources required to tackle this issue as well as the availability of military facilities close to the border to be used in detaining violators of immigration laws.

The president is clearly citing incidences of contraband and drugs being smuggled into the country by illegal immigrants as the reason for his decision. Critics, nonetheless, indicate that this is being used as a scapegoat to offer justification for such actions. According to them, there were already some actions in place such as the 6 months incarceration of illegal immigrants who have had their first encounter and 2 years for those who are caught a second time ( Gonzales, 2018 ). The Attorney General was also reported saying that a zero-tolerance principle ought to be adopted when dealing with such offenders.
It is apparent that the current presidency is seeking to keep away illegal immigrants from the United States. Significant efforts are expected to be taken as the president seeks to obtain reports from all relevant government bodies sanctioned with the mandate of dealing with this issue. The president indicates that the reason behind his current decision is the idea that the immigrants bring drugs and contrabands into the nation which pose a threat to nationals, although critics think that this is just a ploy to defend his actions. Finally, significant focus has shifted towards that current issue as people wait to see whether the stated decrees will be put into practice.
