Introduction

Intermodal transportation dates way back in the 18 th century although people are learning about it today. It involves moving freight or passengers from one means to another, which happens in a terminal that is mainly designed for it. Nowadays, the term restricts itself to transporting containers than passengers. Ideally, this kind of transportation contributes positively to the economy both in the regional and local.Intermodal transportation in America has been there for quite some time, and when one suggests that it should be the catalyst to all innovations, they are right. However, the USA government is in the private sector more than the innovations of intermodal transportation. One would agree to the USA as a catalyst of changes to intermodal transportation because of experience and infrastructure, but it is being limited by the production of nuclear programs.

Experience

The USA has for long been involved in the intermodal freight transportation from way back till now. Ideally, this makes it the ideal country or government to help others on any innovations coming up.It is a required task to see the potential barriers that may hamper the transport system and as a result, create any upgraded technology as well as forecast any risks.America’s dependency on production and customers globally makes it know how to handle, which transport system suits the mode of transportation. Moreover, they have advanced technologies, which makes their work easier for they find out when to apply in case any transportation is to be done ( Boile& Gaspard II, 2002) . For example, the cargo and vehicle tracking technologies have bar codes that have laser read out and radio frequency with readers. As a result, these techniques with readers help to link information to enhance decision making when distributing.

Infrastructure

Originally, the USA’s transport system has always been well developed and accessible. Thousands of Americans invest a lot of money in transportation a lot than any other business. Therefore, America is the right country to help create innovations to change the intermodal form of transportation. Most of the companies in America engage in transportation to move their goods from one place to another.Ultimately, globalization is also one factor that necessitates intermodal transportation to move the produced goods. The USA has well located intermodal terminals and well-organized roads that gives assurance to clearances and weight capacities for a double-stack rail and trucks( Konings et al., 2008) .Similarly, the depth of the waters and the intermodal ports can handle the large containers ships. Hence, the right infrastructure makes the USA the ideal country to act as a catalyst to innovations of intermodal transportation.

Limitations

The USA is involved more in the private sector than in intermodal transportation. It participates in the production of nuclear power, safety, and environmental regulations, setting energy goals and R&D funding. All those mentioned hinder it from making innovations in the intermodal transportation. Some governments in other countries like Russia, France, China and South Korea have adopted nuclear production; thus, making it a point of interest. Apparently, the US military department looks at fighting wars of today and in the future, which shows that a lot of concentration is onto nuclear production than any other thing. The DoD is investing a lot in research however it is falling for the shift towards the commercial sector barring innovations ( Goldemberg, 2009) . Besides, the federal government has contributed to research for purposes of technology. The creation of new technologies as a result of funding is developing the industry’s development.

Conclusion

In a nut shell, intermodal transportation involves transporting freight or passengers by different modes of transportation through terminals explicitly defined for them. The USA is crucial in making innovations for intermodal transportation because of its experience. It started way back in the 18 th century although it was not popular. It can help other countries to suggest ways on how to carry out transportation because of the experience gained. Furthermore, the infrastructure shows how they have been effectively carrying out their transportation of products. However, the involvement in nuclear production is hampering it from making innovations. It is now involved in the private sector particularly with the nuclear production. Conclusively, USA is a well-developed country whereby most countries look to it for aid or learning what they would like to incorporate in their economies.
