Ego, Id and Superego are the major components of Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis. Even though his work is viewed as being strange and outlandish in a way, I believe Fred advanced some valid concepts. His work has a great influence on the future of psychology and theories. One example of far-fetched information is the one dealing with both Electra-complex and Oedipus-complex (Freud’s Psychosexual Theory, n.d.). This suggests that girls develop an interest in their fathers and thus jealous of their mothers whereas boys develop an interest in their mothers and have a feeling of hurting their fathers respectively. However, his work on the various defence mechanisms for example displacement, rationalization, repression, regression and denial appears to be valid according to my opinion. For instance, a teenager who is psychologically affected by wrangles between parents may displace anger on others for instance classmates and instructors. In the case of denial, a parent may not be in a position to believe information about his or her child abusing drugs unless witnessed in person. Regression is typically exhibited in children when parents sire another kid. On the other hand, an individual trying to justify a wrong behaviour as being right is showing signs of rationalization (Freud, 2014).

Just like it was alluded by Freud in his theory, it is indeed true that people resort to the above defence mechanisms when they are faced by an internal conflict that overwhelms them. Therefore, to avoid dealing with the problem directly, one hides behind fake explanations of why things are happening the wrong way. Almost everyone experiences this in their daily life even though the degrees of expression varies from one individual to another. Some individuals display more than one forms of defence. It is for this reason that I am of the opinion that Freud’s theory regarding defence is indeed valid and useful. Furthermore, I also believe that there is some truth in Freud’s fallacy on Id, ego and superego. Whereas I believe this to be true due to the existence of several problems amongst individuals, I still have a problem Freud’s explanation on this issue. Making decisions throughout life is indeed is indeed a complex process where people are faced by internal feuds that have to be addressed in whatever way. This impulse sometimes forces individuals to perform activities that they are not otherwise responsible for or rather that is not to their best interest.

The best example of Id, ego and superego is during impulse buying where one buys a candy bar. However, if the buyer is on a regulated diet, it is believed that there might be some little voice informing him or her why it is a bad idea to buy a candy bar. According to Freud, this is seen and ego trying to suppress individuals’ Id (Engard, 2009). The applicability of these principles, therefore, makes me believe that indeed Freud advanced valid concepts that are utilized in our daily lives. In conclusion, Freud’s psychosexual and psychoanalytic theories are very important in defining various ways of lives of different individuals. Due to several interpretations, however, some concepts in this theories have been rendered invalid while others have the full support of the scholars. His theory of defence still stands to be one of the most recognized theories when dealing with individuals faced by different challenges. His ideas on ID, ego and superego, even though not all people are in agreement with his explanations, are believed to be valid and applicable in people’s daily lives. Psychologist and other theorist should always make references to these concepts when advancing other similar arguments.
