Short Essay In the following brief essay (500-1000 words), analyze the “blind patriarch” scene from Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of A Death Foretold (1983). Why do you think the old patriarch is described in this way? How is this description connected to the central events (for example, the mystery of Angela’s sexual knowledge, and/or the murder of Santiago Nasar) of the novel?
In Chronicles of a Death Foretold, Father Carmen Amador is presented as the blind patriarch because, as the parish priest, he fails in his responsibility to those he has sworn his life to serve. Based on the catholic doctrines, he is supposed to serve God and also take care of His flock, but from the scene, it is evident that he neglects the roles. When the father learns that Santiago is about to be killed, he does not alert the latter of the same. Perhaps by doing so, he feels as if stopping a murder is not as important as the business of the Roman Catholic church and as such, attends to the Bishop’s visit first.
Blindness here is implied in the sense that the father fails to prevent a murder of what could be a biased murder on an innocent victim and member of the church. His love for the church proves to overpower the need to ensure the safety of his flock as he involves himself with the gestures, trappings, and sensual theatrics of the visit. Evidence of this can be noted in the scene where Luis Enrique runs into Father Carmen with his acolytes wearing their altar apparel and robes specifically for the mass to be conducted by the bishop. By bad luck, the service does not take place, and the preparation seems to have been for nothing. As a blind patriarch, the priest lets a murder that he could have prevented take place in his own back yard, thus serving as the main reason why he is described in this manner. The scene is also connected to the revelation of Angela’s sexual status because it is these unraveling that leads to the death of Santiago.
After Bayardo San Román weds Angela Vicario and discovers that she is not a virgin as proclaimed, he taker her back to her family and disgraces her. The mother of the bride beats her mercilessly and, together with her sons, forces her to reveal the person who had deflowered her. The family had expected that as a girl raised under strict catholic doctrines, she would be pure and untouched, but this is not the case. Angela mentions Santiago as the man responsible for the actions, but it is not known whether it is by impulse or a sincere answer. The twins Pedro and Pablo promise to defend her honor by killing the man responsible, and as such, they go around town announcing their intentions to kill Santiago. The connection to blind patriarchy can be seen here because it forms the basis of the brutal murder that took place in the worn. It was expected that some people would not take this threat seriously, but father Carmen had every reason to warn the potential victim and prevent his death. A patriarch has a great responsibility to protect those he leads and serves, but, in this case, blindness befalls the father as he concentrates more on church issues and forgets to safeguard the ones he is obligated to lead.
