Without realizing it, leadership is critical in almost every aspect of human life. Effective leadership enables nations to go through stressful situations and help businesses be successful. On the other hand, the absence of good leadership is equally dramatic as it makes organizations move slowly and stagnate with the likelihood of them losing their way altogether. Excellent leadership demands activeness and not passiveness where leaders do not just sit at the helm ( Ferrell, 2016). Whatever the style of leadership applied or whatever method is used, leadership should boil down to others in a positive direction and effect. There has to be a balance between empowering your staff and setting the pace for them to follow. This means that good leadership is demonstrated by a proper balance of the four managerial functions.

Planning

A manager’s role is to support an organization’s missions and visions while setting an example for others to follow. Leaders are placed in a position where they must stand for something or fail in everything. This means that they should stand firm when it comes to their company’s policies and procedures. As a leader, one must be able to communicate their vision for people to follow. Employees also want some inspiration to believe in what they are contributing to the growth of the business.

Most importantly, vision is demonstrated through strategic, tactical, and operational planning that directs business activities towards achieving the vision of the company ( Winston, 2018). Good leaders can plan strategically on how operations would be done to achieve established objectives. This means that they would have to establish and track goals and objectives for both themselves and their employees. Apart from planning how activities should be done, they are required to set ways on how to evaluate the progress of the business. Excellent leaders should be able to set guidelines on achieving stated visions and how performance would be measured to identify and seal loopholes that may lead to business failure.

Organizing

A good leader is one who carefully organizes his business in a way that would be efficient to achieve established goals. They should first be able to design their business which includes process flows from different departments and appropriate assigning of tasks and responsibilities. However, keen leaders can know the individual capabilities of employees to carefully allocate tasks and responsibilities ( Winston, 2018) . In the same way, they should be able to identify and match demanding tasks with the required skill set.

On the other hand, a good organization includes maintaining the corporate culture and social networks that favour business growth towards the desired direction. Good leaders are influential and capable of moving masses by setting an example for them to follow. Therefore, their influence should be done in such a way that sets the tone and maintain the culture of the organization ( Winston, 2018) . For instance, a leader who despite having tough times, does not shout to employees sets an example to others regarding respect and value. Such a leader maintains a corporate culture of appreciation that extends from the top to the bottom. This means that leaders should value and respect their employees in the same manner. Leaders should set a pace that forces and encourages others to follow and emulate. Fostering a good culture, in turn, encourages people to interact freely with others while building an interactive network or circle of sharing information and other essentials.

Leading

Apart from professional expertise, leaders should demonstrate that they understand the capacity they are in. Involving other employees in decision-making and acknowledging the importance of team efforts is crucial. Leaders should apply inclusion by bringing everyone on board particularly when making critical decisions ( Winston, 2018) . However, inclusion is strongly supported if a leader has good communication abilities. A good leader should be able to communicate with all employees irrespective of their positions. Good communicators keep staff informed, active, and involved in nearly all business processes ( Winston, 2018) . This, in turn, encourages employees to own what they do to increase productivity and work performance. They should be able to organize people in groups and leading them towards achieving set objectives. Leaders should also be able to work in teams as well instead of working alone with a mindset of non-inclusivity ( Winston, 2018) . However, to achieve good teamwork efforts, good leaders should motivate individual employees to foster both business and personal development.

Controlling

Leaders should also establish performance standards that track productivity particularly on whether their leadership style is effective in promoting business growth. A strategic process such as having the right people in the right position also encourages efficiency and effectiveness of assigned tasks. The strategic position of process and systems, as well as people, places leaders in a good position of overseeing the business processes ( Winston, 2018) . This further gives them an upper hand to monitor employees and their productivity. After all, good leaders should be able to know the position their business is to provide the appropriate direction and guidance.
